Binance CEO Richard Teng has recently spoken out against the Nigerian government for its treatment of Tigran Gambaryan, an American executive who has been detained since February. Teng described the treatment of Gambaryan as inhumane, citing a viral video that captured Gambaryan struggling to walk into a courtroom and emphasizing the need for him to be allowed to go home for medical treatment and to be with his family.
The distressing viral video displayed Gambaryan limping as he entered an Abuja courtroom on September 2nd. Despite his request for a wheelchair, the prison authorities refused to provide one, resulting in Gambaryan dragging his left leg behind him. Even when he attempted to seek support from a correctional officer, his efforts were rejected, leaving him to rely solely on a single crutch. Expressing his frustration, Gambaryan questioned why he was denied a wheelchair, stating that he is innocent and does not deserve such treatment.
Concerns about Gambaryan’s health have been reiterated by his family, who have reported a decline in his condition during his time in Nigerian custody. In response, Gambaryan’s legal team filed a bail application based on medical grounds on September 2nd. They pleaded with the judge to release him so that he could receive treatment for various health issues he developed while in prison, including malaria, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and a herniated disc causing severe pain and limited mobility. Despite this, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) opposed the bail request, arguing that Gambaryan’s health was not a concern. The judge has since mandated that Gambaryan be permitted to use a wheelchair, with the case scheduled to continue on September 4th.
As we observe such instances of injustice and mistreatment, it is imperative to demand fair treatment and access to necessary medical care for all individuals, regardless of their circumstances. The case of Tigran Gambaryan serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring that no one is subjected to such deplorable conditions. The global community must unite in advocating for justice and compassion in all situations, especially those that involve vulnerable individuals like Gambaryan. It is only through collective action and unwavering determination that we can strive towards a more equitable and humane society for all.
